The Impact Ronald McDonald Charities had on the Hietpas Family

Almost two years ago, my middle son, Fletcher, was born with a rare Congenital Heart Defect that was found at his 24 hour infant screening. His diagnosis was Supracardiac Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Return; partially obstructed with Atrial Septal Defect. He was rushed down to Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin – Milwaukee where he underwent Open Heart Surgery at just 2 days old to give him a chance at life. He was in recovery for 40 days – in that, having a second open heart surgery at 15 days old.

The Hietpas family.

For the entirety of the stay, my husband and I were fortunate enough to have reserved a spot at the Ronald McDonald House, just across the street from Children’s. For 40 days, selfless volunteers, staff, and surrounding organizations helped make those challenging days a little less stressful. We had a place to stay, completely free of charge with no expectations of donation or repayment for amenities used. There were hot meals prepared for us, along with snacks and prepackaged “to-go” meal items. Our stay extended over St. Nick’s and Christmas and we were blessed with gifts for our Fletcher but also our oldest son, Korver. Ronald McDonald House has a very special place in our family’s hearts.

One of Ronald McDonald House’s fundraising efforts is through collecting and recycling pop tabs. This is a simple way we can give back to the place that gave so much to us!
